The Brief
The Brief
The Brief
The ambitious endeavour of colonising our solar system forms the core premise of this project, drawing inspiration from iconic science fiction narratives across various media. From the optimistic explorations depicted in Star Trek and the profound journeys of Interstellar, to the explorable universes of video games like Destiny and No Man’s Sky, these visions have long fuelled humanity’s imagination of a multi-planetary future.
This project specifically aims to tell the story of one such colony successfully established within our solar system. Set in the distant future, I have envisioned a reality where the once inhospitable planets and moons have been painstakingly terraformed, transformed into new homelands capable of supporting human life. This grand undertaking was driven by the pressing need to address Earth’s overpopulation crisis, offering the promise of a new era of expansion and prosperity where humanity could not only survive but truly thrive amongst the stars... or so they initially believed.

Telling the story of a space colony presented a significant creative challenge, venturing into narrative territory previously unexplored by me. To construct a compelling and immersive experience, I employed ephemera as a central storytelling device, aiming to ground the unfolding events in tangible, relatable details. This approach involved crafting a colonist induction handbook, designed to provide crucial background information and context about the colony’s societal structure, environment, and operational procedures. To further personalise the narrative, I developed a futuristic passport and identification card for the central colonist, imbuing him with a sense of identity and history within this imagined world. The inclusion of detailed medical documents offered insights into the physiological realities of life on the colony, while colony reports provided a more direct and factual account of the unfolding events and challenges faced. All of these disparate elements were carefully curated and presented within the framework of the colonist’s personnel file, creating a cohesive and multi-layered narrative that invites deeper engagement with the story.
